Customers such as Apple and Qualcomm purchase architecture licenses that allow them to modify the architecture and add or remove instructions to customize chips for their specific requirements. Other customers purchase ready-made designs directly from Arm. Both customers using ready-made designs and architecture licensees pay royalties based on the number of chips shipped.
